Are Hoodies an Acceptable Attire on the Golf Course?

30th August 2021

Traditionally, when we think of a golfer, we picture someone dressed in a crisp, neutrally-coloured polo shirt, tucked into formal tailored shorts or chinos - not wearing a hoodie. However as professional golfers become more fitness-minded and golf apparel brands are developing more fashion-forward looks, perhaps to keep up with other sporting fashion, golf attire is becoming much more casual and youthful.

Players such as Erik Van Royen and Justin Thomas are constantly pushing the golf fashion boundaries with non-collar shirts, spikeless golf shoes and jogger style trousers. Are hoodies here to stay on the green?

Should golfers be allowed to wear hoodies on the course?

At the BMW PGA Championships in October 2020, Tyrrell Hatton sparked a controversial debate amongst old-time fans of the game and most probably was a popular conversation in club houses world-wide. 5 time European Tour winner Hatton, was seen wearing the Adidas COL.RDY hoodie in navy blue and much to the disappointment of some golfing purist, the hoodie didn’t affect his play and went on to win the championships.

Following Hatton’s hoodie appearance, a golf club west of Sunderland, UK released a statement "In light of Tyrrell Hatton's recent success and fashion statement and following discussions on this, can I draw your attention to the club's dress code and re-emphasise that 'hoodies' are not acceptable golf attire…” Do you agree with this statement? Do you think that hoodies should only be worn when playing for leisure? Or do you believe that golf fashion is moving forward and dress-code should be relaxed?

There are some favourable benefits to wearing a hoodie on the golf course, especially during the winter months - a favourable way to layer up, yet still having ample room to swing. It allows all players to be comfortable, supports the active element to the game whilst still looking smart and professional.
